Usagi and Gen off on a MISS-ADVENTUUUUURE~! ....although they probably don't know it yet XDD
Anyway, still trying to get better with the whole background thing. This picture came out pretty close to what I was thinking although I think I would've liked it if the forest looked a little thicker. Perhaps I should have made the trees thicker and older looking.
I just finished book 16, and the entire book save for the very last story is of Usagi and Gen hitting the road together, (until Kitsune shows up and Gen decides he wants to hang out with her for a while instead.)
So obviously a lot of Gen/Usagi interaction, but what I liked a lot was apart from the story-lines there was a lot of subtle actions going on between them that really made my day. There is a scene where they're in an inn together talking over plot related plans and stuff they plan to do involving bad-guys. When the innkeeper brings them their drinks Gen ours Usagi's tea and Usagi pours Gen's sake without them even breaking conversation. I really liked this little detail since it's a simple act that speaks a great deal about their relationship. I also like how their friendship has grown and evolved through-out the series thus far. There was a point where Usagi wasn't always pleased to see Gen show up. Where I am currently he's always glad to see Gen and is a little sad when they part ways again.. ...Vice Versa for Gen.
Anyway. I was getting a little emo about the background, but I think in the end it's passable although I still need to practice more. This took a week to do only because I had to work on it little by little every day after work. I don't have a new pencil sketch yet. I'll have to draw something tomorrow to work on. I've drawn 2 pictures in a row of people walking. I think my next picture needs a little more dynamic action to it somehow.
Gen is my second favourite character after Usagi. He's rough around the edges and he sometimes drives Usagi crazy (Although again, Vice versa.) But he's got a very good heart (despite his protest against this idea) and he's a very good friend despite himself.
I really liked drawing him properly waaaaay too much XD. Also, I know that Gen tends to prefer slinging his longer sword across his shoulder but I didn't want his hands obstructing his chest so I tucked it away next to his wakizashi instead. Not exactly canon but truth be told, I wasn't thinking when I drew that and after I'd done so I didn't want to change his pose. Oops.
I like his expression. Gen frowns most of the time unless Usagi steps in something or walks into a tree in which case he cracks the hell up. (incidentally. I've done that and it's not nearly as funny as it sounds... ..although it was a lamp-post and not a tree) Anyway, I liked figuring out how to keep that about his character but still soften his expression so he doesn't look angry.
So yes. Usagi and Gen walking through the forest....

Originality Technique ImpactWow, this is quite the piece of work here! The characters have excellent highlights and shading. The expression on their faces clearly show they are having a conversation on their journey. What really captured my heart is the background. The color and lighting makes it a magical forest type of scenery.
I wouldn't say the background is perfect, since I see some shrubs or some sort of green undergrowth in the distance could use some better details as it looks like grass patches that are overgrown. I am unsure if this was intentional or not. Also the trees as they get further, start to lose it's texture and looks like a big brush stroke. I would say maybe work on the background a bit more. Plus I see some white flowers that look like dandelions in seed, probably look a little better if they were not there because flowers can be a huge distraction in paintings/photographs if not used properly.
I am really impressed with the dirt path you created, beautiful highlights, nice strokes and the natural litter (the twigs and leaves) were placed properly to make it look as natural as possible. You stole my heart with this, Usagi and Gen are beautiful characters and they have been so well dearly illustrated.
