G1 for newbies: Wind Whistler

Description

A very prominent pony of the first generation :) She remained one of the main characters for a very long time, and even had an important roll in the movie. She is also the pony who is most often seen carrying the Rainbow of Light (as far as I remember anyway) Although the rainbow remains with Megan when not needed.

Personality wise, Wind Whistler is probably one of the more interesting ponies... at least as far as "80s stereotype characters" go. In a decade where most characters were written to fall within a very specific archetype (i.e. the nerdy smart one, the scaredy cat who's always afraid, the bossy loudmouth etc) Wind Whistler didn't follow any of the 80s characters in a girl's show you'd expect.

Wind Whistler was "the smart one" but was by no means nerdy at all. In fact, she was considered the most responsible and could even be called the unofficial leader most of the time. Having a very large vocabulary, most of the time Wind Whistler would speak using long, complicated words that the other ponies didn't really understand most of the time. Being a very level headed pony who always thought logically, she almost always kept her cool. However, because of her tendency to always think first, she very often didn't understand other people's emotional responses to things. She often had a hard time understanding other people's feelings and would sometimes get frustrated by what she felt was others overreacting or being silly. However, she was by no means cold or uncaring. Being very brave and always the first to jump into action if it was needed. She very often either was the one to come up with a plan to fix a problem, or leap in to the rescue of some-one else.

I tried to suck a little less with this picture.

Wind Whistler was released in 1985

She's always been a favorite of mine. With her personality she was always a bit deeper than the others. It's as you say, that in a show like that, you usually had one personality trait cranked up to eleven. But Wind Whistler has all this knowledge but doesn't understand things that her more emotional peers consider basic, and they respect her but don't really get her, and it's the same the other way around... how often in a kids show do you see a problem like the one Vulcan on the ship in a Star Trek series doesn't fit in with humans. (Or vulcan-like character like Data. Interesting when Data and Spock actually met. Each has what the other wants but can't appreciate it... but I digress.)

And also, though it's not a point they make, she's very alone. It didn't hit me until I was planning two stories at once. See, I had this G1 based idea where Firefly, Wind Whistler, Gusty, and Shady would end up somewhere through the Gizmonks' teleportation device (long story) and it would be just Gusty and Windy for a while. It'd be fun to have the two together, such opposites, smart and careful and calculating Wind Whistler and bull-headed, temperamental, who-has-time-to-plan-just-smash-it Gusty.

I *also* had this idea for the future of FIM: 300ish years from now, Princess Twilight's new element bearers begin with her faithful student Wind Whistler and said faithful student's best friend Surprise. it'd be fun to have the two together, such opposites... waaaait.

That's when it hit me. that's how it is no matter who you put her alongside. Even characters who are very difeferent from each other are nothing like Wind Whistler, to the point that the appeal is the massive contrast. Temperamental Gusty and calm Wind Whistler. Wacky Surprise and serious Wind Whistler. Head-in-the-clouds Paradise and down-to-Earth Wind Whistler. Brash Firefly and careful Wind Whistler. Scatterbrained Fizzy and genius Wind Whistler. And so on.

There's no one who thinks like her. Her intelligence level makes her like the only adult surrounded by six-year-olds. Wonderful ones, yes, but there's no one on her level. The way her mind works, what she sees in things is not what anyone else sees in things. There's no one who lives in the same world as she does. Even though she's quite liked and respected, she's still the only one whose mind works that way. I imagine most days she doesn't let herself dwell on it - there is no practical purpose to be served by lamenting such things - but we know that she does have feelings even if she doesn't express them in the same ways as others do. It's got to be hard.

Oh, man. Didn't mean to go on that long.
